Lamb’s 3- Point Night Leads Minnesota

Brody Lamb (Minnesota Golden Gophers)

A pretty good Saturday for the New York Rangers prospects playing in North America. Seven saw action and all seven saw their teams earn wins.

Tonights Star Brody Lamb Minnesota (NCAA)

Brody Lamb and his Minnesota Golden Gophers earned a 6-5 overtime win over fourth-ranked Denver University in the US Hockey Hall of Fame Game. The captain of the Gophers had himself a three-point night to help earn the upset win.

In the second period with the game tied at 1-1, Lamb earned his eighth goal of the season when he fired a snap shot past the Denver goalie for an even strength goal at 11:05 of the period.

Lamb’s second point of the game also came in the second period when he was credited with the primary assist on Brody Ziemer’s power play goal coming at 18:52 which put the Gophers up 3-1. In the third with the score tied at 4-4, Lamb would earn his third point of the night when he earned the secondary assist on LJ Money’s power play goal putting Minnesota up 5-4 .

For Lamb the three point effort improved his season totals to a team leading 8-8-16 (third among NYR prospects). Lamb when he is going well is as lethal a goal scorer as you will find in college hockey. What holds him back has been a very bad lack of consistency as Lamb at this time last year had similar numbers but went 11 games without scoring in January.

If Lamb can beat his inconsistency then the Rangers would most likely offer him a contract. If Lamb scores at least 20 goals that should earn that contract.

Rest of the Prospects

Artem Gonchar (Sudbury Wolves)

Artem Gonchar had a power play goal to help his Sudbury Wolves earn a 2-1 overtime win over the Brampton Steelheads in OHL play. In the second period with his team trailing 1-0, Gonchar fired a shot from the top of the slot that beat the Steelhead goalie over his right shoulder.

It was a very nice goal scorer’s goal as he aimed top shelf and put the puck perfectly there.

For Gonchar it was his sixth goal of the season as he improved to 6-9-15 on the season.

Nathan Aspinall (Flint Firebirds)

Nathan Aspinall earned the primary assist on what proved to be the game winning goal as his Flint Firebirds won their 11th straight game 3-2 over the Soo Greyhounds. Aspinall got the assist when Jimmy Lombardi cashed in the rebound of an Aspinall’s backhanded shot at 2:49 of the second period.

The Flint captain extended his personal scoring streak to seven games (9-8-17) as the leading scorer among Ranger prospects (17-20-37) is fourth in OHL overall scoring and fifth in goals. He remains the OHL leader in first goals of the game with six.

Aspinall signed his Rangers entry-level contract in October is making the Rangers look really good as he is playing the best hockey of his OHL career right now.

Raoul Boilard had an assist as his Shawinigan Cataractes needed the shootout before finally edging the Moncton Wildcats 4-3 in QMJHL play. Boilard is another who struggles with his consistency as while he earned the only assist on the Cataractes first goal, he has gone 10 games without scoring a goal. His 5-12-17 is currently second best among Ranger prospects.

Yet at best his potential suggests that he would be a fourth line defensive center as his faceoff skills right now are his saving grace. Against the Wildcats, Boilard was 20-10 on his faceoffs.

For the season Boilard has a 65.9% faceoff win percentage which puts him at the top of the QMJHL centers.

Evan Passmore was scoreless as his Barrie Colts defeated the Kingston Fronenacs 2-1 in OHL play. Passmore was credited with two shots for the game.

Malcom Spence was scoreless as his top-ranked Michigan Wolverines needed overtime to defeat Harvard 4-3 in non-conference play. Spence was credited with one shot and was a +1 for the game.

E. J. Emery was scoreless as his sixth-ranked North Dakota Fighting Hawks defeated Bemidji State 2-1 in non-conference play. Emery was credited with three shots and was a -1.

Did Not Play

Rasmus Larsson was not in the lineup for the second straight game for his Robert Morris Colonials. It is suspected it was a healthy scratch as Larsson when he last played last week was listed as the extra defenseman.
